Izanagi & Izanami

This illustration is part of a series that was based on creation myths from all over the world. Their richness and big variety is a source of inspiration to me. Sometimes the stories are astonishingly beautiful but they can also be very cruel or surprisingly humorous. I’m still stimulated by the abundance of amazing stories that try to explain the reason for our existence. That’s why it is an ongoing project for personal work.

Izanagi & Izanami (Japan)

Izanagi and Izanami were the eighth pair of sibling gods to appear after heaven and earth separated out of chaos. They were given a special spear by the older generations, with which they had to create the first land. So they went to the bridge between heaven and earth and stirred the primeval ocean below with the spear. When they lifted the spear, drops fell back into the water and formed the first solid land, an island called Onogoro. Izanagi and Izanami descended from the bridge of heaven and lived as husband and wife on the island…
